Growing orchids: Place in or near trees and let the grow - Sun Sentinel: "Orchid fanciers know that Mother Nature intended for many orchids to grow on trees in an ephiphytic relationship in which the plant gains support from the tree, but does not draw nourishment directly from it, as other parasitic plants might. But it does benefit from organic materials such as dead leaves and other plant materials that get to its roots.
After I discovered that orchids never seemed particularly happy with the lighting on my screen porch, I started putting them in and around trees. Some of them, I actually tied onto the trees until the ties rotted and the roots took hold. Others hang in baskets from trees, and still others sit in pots under trees or wedged into the crotches of trees."
