With winter just around the corner, gardeners' interests migrate from outdoors to indoors. However, the experienced gardener has found that some of the most heavily advertised houseplants are actually quite difficult to grow.

No. 5 on my "Houseplants to Avoid" list is the colorful croton plant. Crotons are houseplants with lots of curb appeal. Their large, multicolored leaves give a tropical feel to the indoors. Plus, they are easy for suppliers to grow and are inexpensive for the size of the plant.
