Orchid expert warns that his exotic hobby is addictive - Houston Chronicle
Fred Clarke succumbed to the allure of orchids as an 18-year-old. When he came home from an orchid show with two boxes of the exotic plants on which he had spent his life savings - $300 - his mother predicted the infatuation wouldn't last.
That was 35 years ago. Today, his collection fills 10,000 square feet of greenhouse space, and he's a renowned creator of orchid hybrids, including varieties named for his mother as well as the ultra-exotic black orchid that inspired Tom Ford Black Orchid perfume and was featured in the 2010 documentary The Judge, the Hunter, the Thief and the Black Orchid
