December is the season of vibrant red poinsettias, the purple and white blooms of a Christmas
cactus and, of course, holiday staples such as mistletoe.

But most people don’t know much about the plants we associate with winter holidays and snowy
weather.

“There is a lot of misunderstanding out there” on how to care for them and what is and isn’t
poisonous, said Jim Gibson, owner of Timbuk Farms in Granville, which grows poinsettias.
