When William Wyman, a retired real-estate agent, was remodeling his contemporary home on 16 acres in Stockton, N.J., he wanted to bring a splash of life into the modern, mostly white décor. He recalled a big, wild installation of plants he'd seen in New York's Lincoln Center, which seemed to be growing straight out of a wall. "And I thought, 'Bingo,' " Mr. Wyman says.
Now, a lush, 30-foot-high vertical garden filled with orchids, cactuses and ferns cuts through two floors near the home's front entrance—at a cost of about $10,000. "I call it Prozac on a wall," he says.
