Bunchy top | Promusa - Mobilizing banana science for sustainable livelihoods

Bunchy top | Promusa - Mobilizing banana science for sustainable livelihoods: "Bunchy top is a viral disease caused by the Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV). The disease, often called BBTD for banana bunchy top disease, gets its name from the bunchy appearance of infected plants. Plants infected early in their growth cycle do not produce fruits, while plants infected at later stages may produce deformed fruits. Unless infected plants are destroyed, they will serve as a source of viral particles that can be transmitted from plant to plant by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa. The virus is also spread through infected planting material. Strict quarantine measures have been shown to be effective in preventing the spread of the virus 1.
