How Chatsworth gardener's tests had major impact on banana trade | This is Derbyshire: "Bananas are a staple food of healthy eaters and we have a Derbyshire gardener to thank for this. Inspired by a picture of a banana on some painted wallpaper, Chatsworth's Joseph Paxton experimented with this novel plant 200 years ago and could not have envisaged what was to happen. Vivienne Smith reports.

TODAY we take the humble banana for granted. Yet, until the end of the 19th century, it was virtually unknown outside the tropics."
